In July 2024, Hale partnered with Camp Amigo, a remarkable summer camp designed specifically for children who are burn survivors in the state of Florida and southern Georgia. Camp Amigo is vital to the Northern Florida community. They provide healing support, educational resources and various exercises to build resilience.
Founded in 2001 by Tallahassee firefighter Rusty Roberts, the summer camp exists, “to provide kids who have physical and emotional scars a place to be themselves and build a network of support that will last throughout their lives.” The camp is fully funded by private donations and the campers stay free of charge.
Hale employees gathered at the Florida Fire State College July 8-12 to donate supplies, make goody bags and host lunches for the campers for a week of their fun filled summer. The IDEX Foundation donated $7,500 to support the week-long event.
During an outing at Weeki Wachee Springs, Hale provided popup tents for the campers. As they spent the day swimming, the tents offered much-needed shade from the scorching sun, protecting them from harsh UV rays. This protection is especially important for burn survivors or those with sensitive skin, as they are more vulnerable to the harmful effects of UV rays.
Hale Site Leader Palmer Pendleton noted that it was heartwarming to see the kids simply being kids, free from self-consciousness from their scars: “this experience was profoundly impactful, both personally and professionally. It served as a poignant reminder that the challenges we face in our daily lives often pale in comparison to what these children endure every day. Witnessing their joy and resilience put everything into perspective, highlighting the true essence of compassion and community.”
Palmer added, “we are hopeful and excited about continuing our partnership with the camp in the future, eager to support and share more memorable moments with these incredible children and staff.”
