It supports firefighters in the first critical five minutes and empowers teams—both seasoned and new—to focus on the mission at hand when every second counts.

With SAM BOOST, even the leanest teams can perform like a well-oiled machine. Here’s how it tackles some of the most pressing fireground water flow issues and keeps your crew focused on what matters most.

The “Summer of SAM Video Series

The “Summer of SAM” video series is an exciting four-part collaboration between Sentinel Emergency Solutions and IDEX Fire & Safety, focusing on the groundbreaking SAM system. Sentinel’s Owner and President, Brian Franz, and SAM System Founder, Jason Cerrano, combine their expertise to demonstrate how SAM is transforming fireground operations.

Based in St. Louis, Missouri, Sentinel Emergency Solutions is a premier emergency vehicle and equipment dealership serving Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana. They are committed to delivering state-of-the-art apparatus and equipment, providing exceptional sales and service to ensure fire departments are fully equipped to serve their communities. The “Summer of SAM” series highlights this dedication, illustrating how innovative technologies like SAM can help departments operate with added simplicity, speed, and safety.

Part 1: Introduction to SAM

In the first episode of the series, Brian Franz and Jason Cerrano introduce the SAM system, emphasizing its importance and benefits for over 100 fire departments already using it. SAM is revolutionizing pump operations, reducing time spent at the pump panel from minutes to seconds—often as little as 10 to 15 seconds. Every second counts for firefighters, and this time-saving system plays a crucial role in quickly getting water on a fire.

This episode also explores how SAM helps bridge the generational gap in firefighting. While more experienced firefighters appreciate the simplicity and reliability of SAM, the younger generation is eager to adopt this technology, which enhances their natural comfort with digital systems. SAM acts as a skills equalizer, simplifying complex tasks, making it easier for departments to train recruits, and reducing operator errors.

Part 2: Hydrant Operations Simplified

The second video focuses on
hydrant operations and demonstrates how simple and intuitive SAM makes the process. With SAM, water begins flowing as soon as the truck is put into pump gear, allowing the operator to focus on other critical tasks. Pre-sets, such as crosslays and pre-connected lines, ensure that pressure is managed automatically, and SAM adjusts the pressure governor and valves, taking care of these manual processes.

One of the key benefits shown in this episode is that SAM allows the operator to move away from the pump panel to perform other essential functions. The system is designed with dual screens—on both sides of the truck—making operations more flexible and allowing pump operators to
maintain control from different locations on the fireground. Additionally, SAM prevents overfilling tanks and avoids spillage, an especially important feature when operating in cold weather where freezing water can create safety hazards. SAM is engineered to withstand the harshest conditions, whether
extreme heat or bitter cold

Part 3: Drafting Operations with SAM

Part three takes viewers through drafting operations, where water is sourced from tanks or natural bodies of water instead of hydrants. Drafting can be a complex and time-sensitive task, but SAM simplifies it by automating many of the steps that typically require manual control. As with hydrant operations, SAM makes it possible for the operator to manage the pump from multiple locations on the truck.

The episode demonstrates SAM’s ability to handle the same water flow and pressures that firefighters are accustomed to but without the need for manually pulling levers or reading gauges. This level of automation significantly reduces human error and stress, particularly in high-pressure situations. It’s another way SAM is transforming how departments manage water on the fireground, creating more efficient and safe operations.

Part 4: SAM BOOST

The final part of the series introduces SAM BOOST, an extension of the SAM system that can be retrofitted to existing trucks. This enables departments to upgrade their equipment without procuring entirely new vehicles. SAM BOOST allows operators to deploy lines, manage water flow, and charge their own line, all without manual intervention from the pump operator.

This episode shows how SAM BOOST is designed to equip departments for the future, ensuring they can train and support new generations of firefighters. It’s a technology-forward solution for fire departments looking to modernize their operations without overhauling their entire fleet.

Why SAM Matters: Features & Benefits

SAM is a complete transformation in how fire departments manage water flow and pump operations on the fireground. By automating critical processes, SAM allows operators to focus on the firefighting mission rather than being bogged down by complex pump operations.

The SAM system improves traditional fire truck pumping with automation, freeing the operator to focus on the fireground and the attack crew. It adds controllers to traditionally placed valves and integrates them with the pressure governor. Here’s a closer look at some of SAM’s key features and benefits:

  • Improved Efficiency: SAM dramatically reduces the time needed to manage pump operations. By automating tasks like hose charging and pressure regulation, SAM enables departments to respond faster and more effectively.

  • Enhanced Safety: With SAM, operators can control water flow from multiple locations, keeping them out of dangerous areas near the pump panel. The system also reduces the likelihood of overfilling tanks and spilling water, particularly in freezing conditions where slip hazards are common.

  • Skills Equalization: SAM simplifies operations, allowing firefighters of all experience levels to perform tasks traditionally reserved for more seasoned operators. This is especially beneficial for departments facing recruitment challenges, as it shortens the learning curve for recruits.

  • Real-Time Data: SAM provides operators and crews with real-time data on water levels, pressure, and tank status, allowing for faster, more informed decision-making during critical moments on the fireground.

  • Adaptability with SAM BOOST: SAM BOOST gives fire departments the flexibility to retrofit their existing apparatus, making it a cost-effective solution for departments that want to embrace modern technology without purchasing new trucks.

SAM uses only SAE J1939 automotive standards, the same standards that the heavy vehicle industry has used for over twenty years. The system is engineered as a complete system with a one-piece, factory-grade harness in a style commonly used for engine and chassis components. That standardization means the wire harness is never spliced, and every SAM exceeds the same exacting quality controls. SAM makes zero modifications to existing water flow apparatus, with valves manufactured by Akron Brass, a fellow trusted IDEX Fire & Safety brand
